Art Major - Secondary Art Education Emphasis


The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Art Education is a professional degree which focuses on intensive work in art and design supported by a program of general studies. This degree enables students to develop the range of skills, knowledge, and competencies required of an art educator. Students will be provided opportunities to develop various studio skills and later to teach these skills. Students will develop their understanding of artistic styles and their relationship to culture and prepare to relate this understanding to subsequent students.

Students must exhibit; a potential to excite the imagination and engende r respect for the visual arts, the ability to learn and apply new ideas in art and education, the ability to develop positive relationships with individuals and groups of various backgrounds, and the ability to communicate the goals of an art program effectively and professionally.

The Department of Art and Design at Southern Utah University has a facult y of committed artist/educators who guide and involve their students in many small group and individual endeavors that promote aesthetic and critical thought and skills. The Art Major Seminar is a unique enlightening , energizing and unifying program where students can encounter and discuss an incredible variety of art and design, and meet faculty, visiting artists and students with similar interests and challenging differences.

Graduates will prepare themselves for a career in art education in a secondary school or for graduate studies in art and education.
